Treatment of Meningitis

People who are suspected of having meningitis or septicemia should be taken to the hospital as soon as possible. This is a serious condition and emergency. Handling depends on the type of meningitis owned.



Due to Bacterial Meningitis

Hospitalization immediately necessary for bacterial meningitis patients. For patients with meningitis are severe, treatment may be carried out in the Intensive Care room or ICU.

Bacterial infections treated with antibiotics. The drug is administered by infusion into a vein in the arm. If antibiotics overcome it, then only need to spend about a week in the hospital. But if the case is severe conditions, may have to be hospitalized for several weeks or even several months.

Treatment may also include administration of oxygen, intravenous fluids and steroids, or other drugs. Steroids are given to reduce inflammation or inflammation in the brain. And keep in mind that meningococcal disease (meningitis and septicemia combination) can cause long-term complications.



Meningitis Due to Virus

Cases of viral meningitis can be divided into two, severe and mild. Below are the forms of treatment.



1. Treatment of mild viral meningitis

Most people with viral meningitis do not need to be hospitalized. Handling at home alone to cope with viral meningitis, among others:

- Pain medication for headaches

- Anti emetic or anti-nausea, avoid vomiting

- Plenty of rest

- Drink plenty of fluids

- With the above treatment, most patients recover within 1-2 weeks.



2. Treatment of severe viral meningitis

If the symptoms of viral meningitis is quite severe and needs to be hospitalized, it will be treated the same as the handling of bacterial meningitis, namely by taking antibiotics. Antibiotics will be withdrawn if the diagnosis of viral meningitis has been ascertained, but will continue to be given intravenous fluids to help the body recovery process.

Anti-viral drugs may be given. This occurs when viral meningitis cases get worse in people who are hospitalized.



How to Control Infection Happens

The risk of the spread of meningitis cases is quite low because most cases of meningitis are isolated. For prevention to avoid infection, a single dose of antibiotic can be given. For example, antibiotics are given to children who play with other children who suffer from bacterial meningitis.
