Meningitis Prevention

Meningitis is the result of an infection that spreads. Bacteria or viruses that cause meningitis can be spread through coughing, sneezing, kissing, or sharing equipment. Some initial steps to prevent contracting meningitis are:

- Washing hands

- Practicing hygienic life

- Healthy lifestyles

- Shut your mouth when sneezing or coughing

- If you are pregnant, be careful in choosing foods



Many cases of viral and bacterial meningitis can be prevented with a variety of vaccines. Talk to your doctor if you are unsure whether your latest vaccination or not. The vaccine is already available, among others:

1. MMR (measles, mumps and German measles): Can be given at age 12 months, the vaccine replicates the age of 5-7 years

2. Pneumococcal vaccine (PCV): Age under 1 year old are given once every two months, over two years fairly administered once

3. Vaccination DTaP / IPV / Hib: Protection of the bacterium Hib, diphtheria, cough, tetanus and polio virus

Application of Meningitis Vaccine For Travel

The bacterium Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus) is rarely found in Indonesia. So many Indonesian people who do not have immunity to the bacteria. Vaccination is highly recommended for people in Indonesia who are traveling to high risk areas. High-risk area or region of origin of these bacteria are Saudi Arabia and some countries in Africa. Umrah applicants are required to receive the meningitis vaccine before going to prevent meningitis.



Visiting places with a high risk of contracting meningitis

It is strongly recommended to vaccinate against meningitis groups A, C, Y and W135, if traveling to high-risk areas. Especially if you make a plan like the one below:

- Staying with local residents in the congested area to attend the Hajj or Umrah in Saudi Arabia

- Conducting excessive activity in the area of ​​Hajj in Saudi Arabia, become a seasonal worker

- Staying longer than a month as tourists beransel



The vaccination

For infants aged between two months to two years, the initial dose of vaccine should be followed by a second dose three months. Meningitis vaccine is not suitable for infants aged less than two months.

When they first vaccination for children under five years, the vaccine provides protection for two to three years. One dose of the vaccine will provide protection for about five years for adults and children aged over five years.

To protect you from meningitis groups A, C, Y, and W135 meningococcal vaccination ACYW135 needed. Vaccination should be given two to four weeks before you travel around.



Side effects of vaccination

One out of ten people who injected vaccine ACWY will get pain and rash around the injection wound. Usually these side effects will last for one to two days. Serious reactions are rare, but mild fever can occur. This condition is more common in children than adults.
